Help & FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How often is the earthquake data updated?

Our earthquake data is updated in real-time as new information becomes available from our data sources, typically within minutes of an earthquake occurrence.

What do the magnitude numbers mean?

Earthquake magnitudes are measured on the Richter scale. Generally:

  • 2.0-2.9: Minor, usually not felt
  • 3.0-3.9: Minor, often felt but rarely causes damage
  • 4.0-4.9: Light, noticeable shaking
  • 5.0-5.9: Moderate, can cause damage to poorly constructed buildings
  • 6.0-6.9: Strong, can cause damage in populated areas
  • 7.0+: Major to great, can cause serious damage

How accurate is the location data?

Location accuracy depends on the seismic network density in the region. Most earthquakes are located within a few kilometers of their actual epicenter.

Can you predict earthquakes?

No, earthquakes cannot be predicted with current scientific methods. We provide monitoring and information about earthquakes that have already occurred.
